If you’re building an AI startup, here’s what you need to know:

Angel investors participated in nearly 25% of all AI deals in Q2’25, yet most founders had never heard of them

The numbers are staggering.

In 2025, AI captured 50% of all global funding, jumping from 34% in 2024.

Within that, AI and machine learning startups captured 25% of total angel investments - making angels the second-largest category of backers after institutional VCs.

US angels alone backed 70,000 deals worth $28 billion in 2025.

But here’s the founder’s blind spot:

Most angel investors operate privately.

They don’t advertise.

They don’t have websites.

They move through private networks - meaning founders pitching VCs miss the capital flowing through angels entirely.

Angel vs. VC dynamics are fundamentally different.

Angels move 5–10x faster than institutional VCs - writing first checks in weeks, not months.

They bet on people and early-stage signal, not late-stage metrics.

Crucially, top AI angels like Elad Gil (36 AI deals since Jan 2024), Gokul Rajaram (30), and Jeff Dean (30) have backed companies like Perplexity, Cognition, and Scale AI - household names now, but founders caught them early.

The distribution of capital is revealing.

90% of top AI angels focus on the application layer - founders building on foundation models to solve specific problems (AI agents, enterprise search, computer vision tools).

This means if you’re building an AI application, angels are actively hunting for you. And 40% of companies backed by top AI angels are founded by big tech veterans - former Meta, Nvidia, and Google operators.

Valuations reflect the appetite.

Seed-stage AI companies command a 42% valuation premium compared to non-AI startups, signaling conviction and accelerated growth expectations.

Series A AI rounds average $51.9 million (30% higher than non-AI peers).

Yet finding these angels is impossible without intelligence.

Public databases rarely surface private angels.

LinkedIn searches are noise.

You need a curated list of verified AI angel investors with proven track records - names, backgrounds, investment history, and contact intel.
